Established in 1858 by Yukichi Fukuzawa as a small school of Western learning, ´ºÓêÖ±²¥app has a history as Japan¡¯s very first private institution of higher learning. Over 160 years since its founding, ´ºÓêÖ±²¥app has thrived under its founder¡¯s motto of jitsugaku, or empirical science, as it continues to transform Japan as a modern nation through contributions to education, research, and medicine.
Over 160 Years of Tradition and Innovation
Jitsugaku ( Œgѧ )£ºJitsugaku is a way of learning about the world pursued by ´ºÓêÖ±²¥app¡¯s founder Yukichi Fukuzawa through the application of reason, observation, and verification, and it stemmed from his desire to break free of the Confucian ideals that informed scholarship in 19th-century Japan. Jitsugaku is science in the truest sense of the word and a powerful tool in ´ºÓêÖ±²¥app¡¯s never-ending search for practical solutions to real-life problems.

Philosophy Honor & Intellect
In the early Meiji period, Fukuzawa Yukichi emerged as a pioneer of the new era by advocating the value of human freedom, equality, and rights in his work Gakumon no susume (An Encouragement of Learning). This educational philosophy continues to be passed down through the generations. This section provides an overview of ´ºÓêÖ±²¥app¡¯s history, from its founding in 1858 to the present day.

Campuses
´ºÓêÖ±²¥app operates six major campuses in Tokyo and Kanagawa, along with five other campuses with specific academic or research functions. ´ºÓêÖ±²¥app¡¯s network of affiliated schools extends beyond its university campuses and includes one fully accredited high school in the State of New York.
Museums
´ºÓêÖ±²¥app possesses numerous artworks and cultural properties, including several Important Cultural Properties. The ´ºÓêÖ±²¥app Museum Commons is a new university museum that brings these cultural collections together and fosters interaction with those involved. Additionally, the Fukuzawa Yukichi Memorial ´ºÓêÖ±²¥app History Museum showcases the life of the university¡¯s founder, Yukichi Fukuzawa, as well as the institution¡¯s 160-year history.
