Tateshina Lodge was established in 1973 on a vast site of nearly 60,000 tsubo (approx. 200,000 square meters) near Lake Megami, northwest of Mount Tateshina in Tateshina Town, Kitasaku District, Nagano Prefecture. Located at an altitude of 1,500 meters within the Yatsugatake-Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park, it is an off-campus facility where students can study and play sports amidst rich nature. The lodge is open for six months from May to October, and is primarily used during the summer vacation for training camps by university and affiliated schools' clubs and university seminars. In early summer and early autumn, it is also used for the Yochisha Elementary School's Highland School. As of April 2017, the total building area of the lodge is approximately 6,200 square meters (nearly 1,900 tsubo), with a guest capacity of about 200 people.
The main buildings constructed at the time of opening were the Central Building, the Classroom Building, and the Lodging Buildings (Buildings 1, 2, and 3). Except for the dining hall in the Central Building, which partially used steel frame construction, they were simple single-story wooden structures covered with steel plates (galvanized iron). Subsequently, a reinforced concrete gymnasium was built in 1978, and in 1994, the wooden single-story Lodging Building 3 was rebuilt as a two-story reinforced concrete structure (with a bathroom wing added in 1996). In 1997, an arbor with plumbing was installed in the open space in front of the gymnasium, which is used for camping and other activities. Due to the harsh climate, including heavy snowfall and cold, as well as the lack of maintenance during the periods when the lodge is closed, the facilities deteriorated quickly. By the time 30 years had passed since construction, large-scale renovations became necessary. The interior and exterior renovations carried out over several years starting in 2006, centered on Lodging Buildings 1 and 2, not only extended the life of the buildings but also improved the indoor environment, receiving positive feedback from users. However, the buildings from the time of opening are steadily aging, which remains a challenge for the future.
The land is leased from Tateshina Town. Prior to the construction of the lodge facilities, a lease agreement was signed in 1963, and preliminary preparation of the grounds began the following year. For about nine years until the start of lodge construction in 1972, various people, including then-President Takamura, visited the site for inspections. It appears that during this period, serious consideration was given to the full-scale utilization plan.
There are ski resorts near the lodge, and at the time of construction, a drying room for ski use was installed in the Central Building, suggesting that winter use was also envisioned. However, it seems that it was never actually used during the winter. While the detailed circumstances are unknown, it was likely judged that the winter environment in the area was harsher than expected, and that the facilities and operations could not fully cope with it.
Access to Tateshina Lodge required a considerable amount of time by both rail and car at the time of its opening, but this was greatly improved with the opening of the Joshin-etsu Expressway in 1993 and the Nagano Shinkansen (now the Hokuriku Shinkansen) in 1997. This educational environment surrounded by vast nature is a very precious asset for the Juku, and we wish to utilize it effectively.
